  1. Paint an Accent Wall

A cool and calm color scheme often softens a space and can make a small room appear even smaller. If you are into color, go bold and bright or even dark and cozy but on an accent wall only. Using the same color on the trim and ceiling is also a nice way to add height to your space, but remember to go one shade lighter on the ceiling.

  1. Choose Acrylic

This is an easy one – acrylic is transparent so it takes up less visual space. When choosing a side table, coffee table, dining chair, desk chair, etc. always consider acrylic or glass first. Nesting tables are also a great way to maximize space – just pull out the tables when you need them and push them back when you don’t.

  1. Double up on floor length mirrors

Adding a large mirror is the easiest way to open up a room, making it appear double its size. Mirrors reflect both natural and artificial light making the room seem lighter and brighter. Smaller mirrors are nice for decoration but larger, floor length mirrors are the way to go when looking to open up your space and give the appearance of depth. Go with two mirrors and place them side-by-side.

  1. Bold Accents

Limit any big, bold prints to decorative accessories, such as throw pillows and blankets or fabric choices for smaller furniture pieces, such as a stool or pouf. Larger dominant pieces like the sofa should be solid and light.

  1. Lighten Up

Dimly lit rooms have a tendency to disappear so add table lamps, floor lamps or wall sconces (if you are allowed) in the corners of the room. Placing these objects at the corners maximizes your floor plan and ultimately your square footage.

  1. Make the Curtains Floor To Ceiling

A great trick for making your ceiling seem taller is to add floor to ceiling curtains. When selecting drapes, make sure that they are the same color as it’s closest wall. Sticking to the same color will help the curtains to blend in, creating a streamlined effect.

7. Opt for Poufs

When it comes to seating, poufs are always your best bet. They are so versatile, can be moved around anywhere, stacked or stored under your coffee table. Set a tray on top of one and you have an instant side table. It’s also the perfect solution for the casual entertainer – seating will never be an issue again.
