Five Inspirational Interiors From Cinema

Great movies are always in style, and that’s because they feature the stylish. The words Hollywood and glamour are intrinsically linked. So films are a perfect place to get interior design inspiration. We’ve decided to feature some of our favorite interiors from cinema, featuring some of our favorite interiors and some of our favorite films. We recommend you watch these movies before you redesign your home – not only are there plenty of design secrets to glean in each shot, you’ll get a chance to laugh (and sometimes cry) as well.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961)

Breakfast at Tiffany’s (1961, dir. Blake Edwards)

Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly exudes style, from her little black dress to her chic apartment. This film is iconic, as much for Hepburn’s character as the New York socialite lifestyle it lionizes. Be sure to check out Holly’s cool Manhattan apartment. Modern furniture is juxtaposed against refined, aristocratic touches.

The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Gwyneth Paltrow plays Margot Helen Tenenbaum, the template for many of the complex, crafty indie film heroines of the past decade. Her environs in the Tenenbaum house are a catalog of eccentricity, and also also perfect mix of vintage decor and funky accents.

Something’s Gotta Give (2003)

Something’s Gotta Give (2003, dir. Nancy Meyers)

Diane Keaton plays Erica Jane Barry in this movie by Nancy Meyers. Erica is a retired playwright living in the Hamptons. It’s hard to not fall in love with these upscale interiors and their casual, lived-in elegance. It’s also a challenge not to laugh at the clever script that skewers aging baby boomers.

A Single Man (2009)

A Single Man (2009, dir. Tom Ford)

This movie follows a Californian university professor mourning the passing of his partner. Fashion designer turned director Tom Ford, as well as the production team from the TV show Mad Men, turn every second of this film into a visual feast. Julianne Moore plays Charley, whose room is a perfect example of an unbelievably chic cinema space. If only we could get an art department to work on our apartment.

It’s Complicated (2009)

It’s Complicated (2009, dir. Nancy Meyers)

Meryl Streep plays Jane Adler, a baker living in Santa Barbara, in our second Nancy Meyers film. Jane lives in a 1920’s Spanish-style ranch house with an indoor-outdoor sensibility. Fabled California easiness is everyone; these interiors achieve an accessible mixture of family and professional life. Which also serves as the perfect place for a baker conducting two affairs, of course. Grab your popcorn, folks; you’ll need to pause this one to take notes on the interiors, partly so you don’t miss the laughs.
