Make the Most of Your Staircase this Holiday

With the holidays just around the corner, there is no time like the present to inject a little Christmas charm into your home! Perhaps you want to surprise your loved ones with something new and fresh this year, or maybe your want to evoke the warm traditional feeling of an old-fashioned Christmas. In either event, the staircase is the perfect place to start.

Fully Dressed

The staircase is a great place to display your stockings. Throw in a bit of boxwood garlands and some twinkling lights for added appeal. Peeking in the stockings is always a Christmas morning favorite, so why not feature them center stage this year?

Dazzling Jewels

If you are tired of the old-fashioned country look than your staircase is the perfect place to make a holiday statement, especially if it’s in your entryway. Here’s a simple way to do it that looks fantastic and expensive but costs very little in term of time or money. Suspend a multi-stringed beaded garland along your banister using white ribbon, or any color you’d like. Wire together a few trios of ornaments and attach them to the ribbon. Tuck in gilded leaves for extra flourish and voilà, a classy touch to your Christmas cheer.

Garlands Galore

When it comes to decorating your staircase, you can never go wrong with garland. I prefer to drape my garland along the bottom of the banister, allowing those lovely spindles to remain visible. This little trick also adds come appeal to the otherwise plain wall below. You can even hang your stockings from the top of the banister for the best of both worlds.

Bundles of Cheer

Looking to switch it up this year? Try trading out those traditional swags of greenery trailing down the banister with some easy to make holiday bunches. Simply grab some natural birch or dogwood branches/twigs, tie a few bunches of fresh evergreens on top, and finish off the look with bright red winterberries and a bow. And just like that you’ve created a matte and glossy look that ups the ante of your traditional holiday banister décor.

Add Accents

Adding a few holiday accents will turn an otherwise plain staircase into a cheerful addition to your holiday décor. White twigs dipped in mica, glittery snowflake ornaments, old-fashioned ornaments, and even earthy accents add a frosty touch to the traditional greenery used on your staircase. Don’t forget the steps! Be sure to adorn the steps with a few of pretty wrapped gifts or a pail of decorative pinecones.
