Post Minimalism Decor

What is post-minimalism? Minimalism is everywhere and easy to understand. It is a movement related to modernism, both reductive and decorative. It emphasizes a stripped down aesthetic. However, post-minimalism posits there is a limit to minimalism. We must move past minimalism, to free ourselves to explore new frontiers.

However, the genie cannot be put back in the bottle. Therefore, we must reckon with minimalism. In our contemporary moment, it is important to assess what sort of future we want – not by refuting the past, but by embracing and nurturing those elements that will bear productive fruit. Like a gardener, we have to nurture those elements that will yield what we envision as the highest ideal. Therefore, to begin we must ask the right questions.

Post Minimalism is Active Living

Minimalism as an ethos and an ethics can limit our actions. Minimalism seems to say, do only what is necessary and never any more. However, life in all its dimensions does not recognize a sedentary, passive approach. Post minimalism recognizes the beauty of simplicity, but only as a beginning. It sets the stage by clearing our spaces of unwelcome elements. Passion moves in where there is open space. Minimalism is a welcome constraint only when it opens to a second action, a return of agency.

Create Your Environment

Post minimalism decor is about creating environments that inspire creativity and an active life. It draws from Eastern thought such as Zen, but is situated more in the contemporary moment. It is an approach to processing the fundamentals of a digital and global culture. Ask yourself: Where am I going, and where am I coming from? How can my space pay witness to both the past and future? Choose fundamental shapes, but include organic forms. Choose colors that are simple and blend well, but also honor the joy you experience in your favorite hues. Discover the primary function of each space, and collect together furnishings that will keep you focused.

Simplicity Without Losing Intimacy

Remove the unnecessary clutter and leave space for your passions to grow. Trust your intuition. Are there objects in your room you no longer use? Discard them; you don’t need them. Try to discover objects with an essence of craftsmanship and personality. Your higher self recognizes what you need in your life. Lower your defenses and open yourself to constant discovery. Most of all, decor is process. Therefore, it must honor people above things.
