Hans Wegner, Danish Modern Master

Mid-Century Modern Chairs

Hans Wegner is the internationally recognized master of the chair. Trained as an apprentice to a cabinetmaker, the Danish designer had a great facility and understanding of woodworking. His designs are recognized as a particularly functional version of modernism. They became centerpieces in the mid-century modern revival. Our collection gathers together in one place many of his most iconic designs.

  • Organic Design for Modern Chairs

Hans Wegner designs combined traditional furniture concepts with bold new modern techniques. The popular Ming chair features a steam-bent back rail that sweeps around to become arms. The same sweeping angle is found on the seat of the shell chair and back of the upholstered Wing chair, which also features very modern tube steel legs. The Papa Bear chair is made of wood yet features sleek modern lines. It is often called the most comfortable chair ever made. Other designs, like the Flag Chair and the Hoop Chair, features radical, modern designs made from familiar elements.
