How to achieve the bohemian look

The dictionary defines “bohemian” as a person, especially an artist, poet, etc., who lives in an unconventional, nonconforming way. Most of us are familiar with the term boho-chic. But how does this translate to our interiors? I think the key word here is “unconventional.” Bohemian style doesn’t follow the rules. More is more. Pile on the patterns. Mix untraditional colors. Be bold with your choices.

In bohemian design, patterns and plants reign supreme.

An easy way to achieve the look is to incorporate patterned throw pillows. Look for ones made from (1) vintage suzanis, and mix them with pillows featuring (2)ikat and (3) tie dye.

Then let’s move to the floor. This is great place to add more pattern. A BeniOurain rug (a traditional Moroccan rug) is soft and inviting. Its simple geometric pattern can be incorporated into any design style, from traditional to modern.

Or go for a more bold and bright pattern with a colorful jute rug. This Natural Jute/Cotton Pradesh Rug is small enough to be layered with other rugs, a defining style of bohochic.

Now that the foundation has been laid, bring in some greenery, and the more the better.

Hang plants from a macramé planter. Group several different species of plants in the corner of a room. The Ver. 1.0 Half Gloss Brassplanter adds a reflective element with its brass base.

But bohochic doesn’t just mean macramé and beaded curtains. It can lean more traditional or modern.Think outside the box, that’s what the style is all about. If all-out bohemian isn’t for you but you desire to add a bit of the colorful, laid-back vibe to your home, keep it balanced by choosing just a few key elements of the style.

Select one statement-making plant, like the fiddle leaf fig, and add a pouf or two to bring the boho feel to your home. These two elements can be easily incorporated into an already traditional interior.

Try the Round Tribal Kilim Pouf. It will add texture, pattern and color.

And finally, when selecting furniture, look for something rustic and/or organic. A live-edge coffee table will suit the look. Or a salvaged wood dining table paired with dining chairs upholstered in a colorful print.  Try the Angus Side Table:

And for a fun dining chair, the Escobar Occasional Chair Patchwork Multicolor will liven up your dinner parties.

It’s all in the mix. Be bold and have fun!
